Fan Reviews:

From NewYearSunrise: So we went to see Glassjaw last night in Chicago.

This was the 15th time i’d seen them play live, and i’m pretty sure it was the best show i’ve ever seen them play, and probably one of the best shows i’ve been to, period.  Granted, it might’ve seemed that way last night because i hadn’t seen them in more than three years, but now that i’ve settled down a bit and i can really look at it objectively, i’m still about 95% sure.

It was definitely a bit jarring seeing them up onstage with the original lineup, and i’ll admit i was a bit apprehensive at how they would sound with only one guitar.  I expected the songs to be a bit more stripped down, but i was WAY wrong.  I almost think they work better as a 4-piece - the music doesn’t sound quite as… i dunno.  It’s just a lot more straightforward and in-your-face.

And the setlist - holy fuck.  After last night, i sort of look back on all the other shows as “Glassjaw Lite.”  It’s pretty obvious they’re trying to pull away from the poppier stuff and re-embrace their hardcore roots, because the setlist was just completely fucking brutal.  Even songs that would normally be considered lighter fare (Ape Dos Mil, Mu Empire) had a rough, raw edge to them, with a lot more of Daryl’s manic screaming and freaking out.  Other folks have posted the setlist already, so i won’t bother.

The show ran about 70 minutes, give or take.  Daryl said they wanted to keep talking to a minimum, because all they wanted to do was play, and that’s pretty much exactly what happened.  He did make a point of thanking the Deftones for convincing them to get back out on the road and start playing shows again, and he urged the crowd to continue to support heavy music, because heavy music was extremely important.

You really couldn’t have asked for a better show.  The crowd was insanely hot, the band was extremely tight, and Daryl’s voice was in top form.  I’ll never stop being amazed at how effortlessly he can switch from wild, frenetic screaming to gorgeous melody, and then right back.  I dare say that the only musician that can do it better is Mike Patton, and i’m sure it’s no coincidence that Daryl’s a major Patton fan.

I really wish i could go out and hit a couple of other dates on this tour, because it’s hard to say when they’ll be back on the road again.  But hopefully the crowds on the rest of the tour will be just as energized as they were last night, and maybe that’ll push the guys to get the new record finished and get back out there.  I can’t fucking wait.

Also, i have to mention the signs at the merch booth, because i laughed my as off when i saw them.

“No, Glassjaw is NOT doing a signing, but i’ll sign your girlfriend’s tits.”
“Since so many of you are so annoying, NO REFUNDS and NO EXCHANGES.  Unless you tip.  Seriously.”

From Artan:
This was an amazing show. Me and 2 other friends drove up to Minneapolis and saw the show there. I was hoping there would be more GJ fans but there were a lot of ignorant Deftones fans there. It looked like the GJ boys were a lot more comfortable playing Chicago then they were in Minneapolis, because there were a lot more fans there. Everyone got into it in there. They looked like they were having a lot more fun with the Chicago fans, no one can show their love for glassJAw better than us. We tore the House of Blues apart. I can’t remember the full setlist right now, I’m sure someone will post it soon. It included Jesus Glue, (You Think You’re) John Fucking Lennon, Motel of the White Locust, Pretty Lush, Ape Dos Mil, Siberian Kiss, Star Above My Bed, and many more…

From julianstoked:
Glassjaw is my favorite band and I was very excited for this show, but let me just say, the crowd ruined it for me. I have been too many, many shows, but this was by far the worst example stupidity shown by a crowd I have ever seen. First, booing a decent hardcore band like Crime in Stereo (who sounds quite a bit like the Movielife, but I am assuming most of those children have never heard the Movielife). And then push-pitting during glassjaw. How gay is that? Seriously, it would have been less gay if 500 dudes would have just been fucking each other. I had a better time making fun of every single kid in site, and starting trouble. But holy shit….star above my bed.

there’s the setlist, i got my from the sound guy and dont have a shaved head though haha.

i also agree that the crowd was the only thing that that sucked last night. maybe its just me but i dont want people throwing fists and doing windmill crap and kicking in the pit. didnt that go out in the 80’s? i guess im just not down with the “hardcore” scene. im used to metal pits where at least theres respect and fists arent flying. but besides the crowd

the set was as above with an encore of “motel of the white locust” and “babe” im not 100% sure but i think motel was the only song they played that was not on the setlist. nattural born farmer doesnt sound much different i thought it would have been reworked. beck is the man on guitar, he played every song so well only at a few times could you notice there wasnt a second guitar. during “jesus glue” he did some sick solo stufff when daryl was screaming. overall it was a good time. daryl thanked the deftones for letting them tour with them even though they werent there last night, and also mentioned it was the deftones who told them to get back together so they could go on tour together or something along those lines.

most definitely show of the year.

most definitely best show i’ve ever seen, and i’ve seen glassjaw and head automatica multiple times prior.

they played/sounded/looked amazing, and that was the most energetic and vibrant i’ve ever seen daryl (in glassjaw OR head automatica).

i really can’t say enough for this man, this band, or this show.
