The Return (and future) of Glassjaw in 2007
Posted: Thursday, February 22nd, 2007 in Daryl Palumbo and Head Automatica and Glassjaw and House of Blow | Post a Comment
Glassjaw has been featured in the latest Alternative Press magazine.
Post-hardcore hardliners had plenty to celebrate when the mighty GLASSJAW decided to hit the road for a round of shoes in the Midwest and Eastern Seaboard. The “alumni lineup” - Singer Daryl Palumbo, guitarist Justin Beck, Bassist Manny Carrero (Saves the Day) and drummer Durijah Lang (Classic Case) - played 14 shows to rabid crowds who had been waiting since 2003 for the band to return to the road.
In Between Studio Sessions (with Hatebreed’s Sean Martin for their House of Blow project and with Thursday’s Geoff Rickly in the grind aggregiate United Nations) and heading off on tour with Head Automatica, Palumbo briefly chated with AP about Glassjaw’s reconveining, the overwhelming response to the shows and what the future holds. Rest assured Palumbo is just as stoked about the prospect of new music as his fans “This is the fourth phase of Glassjaw, and I’m excited about it,” he says, enthusiasitically. “It’s the best sounding band we’ve had in 14 years.”
AP: The Response to the tour has been amazing. What do you chalk up Glassjaw’s legendary status to?
Daryl Palumbo: “Legendary?” [Laughs] “That’s hilarious!”
AP: Okay, so you’re not Black Flag, but you can’t deny that in many circles, Glassjaw is considered this mythical thing.
Daryl Palumbo: These shows were the biggest headlining tour the band had ever done. Why is that when we decided to play shows, more people wanted to see it now than they had originally? Seriously.
AP: I don’t know: That’s why I’m asking you.
Daryl Palumbo: The last tour we did was Warped Tour in 2003. [On that tour,] there were people who wanted to see us, but some days I felt like only 60 people knew who we were. We stepped back to do other things in our lives, and to have this response now is amazing. I’m so honored that anyone really remembers what we set out to do. There are so many bands these days . If we were 16 years old starting a metal band now, we would be drowned. We’re lucky that we took some years off and more people come out now.
AP: On this outing, you played three unreleased tuns: “Natural Born Farmer” - which dates back to 2003 - “(You Think You’re) John Fucking Lennon” and “Jesus Glue”. Will there be a new Glassjaw disc this year? Where is Glassjaw activity on your day planner anyway?
Daryl Palumbo: Head A has touring and recording commitments for the beginning of this year. After that, I hope Justin, Manny and I can set aside some time to record. We’d like to do the record ourselves so we can it at our own leisure, rather than at gunpoint by some fucking producer. We decided to tour instead of record, and I think that this tour was the first step in making it all happen.
AP: We heard that Crime In Stereo got completely booed off the stage in Chicago. Is there a big mook contingent surround Glassjaw?
Daryl Palumbo: They did? I had no idea, I didn’t see their set. That sucks, Crime In Stereo are real-deal New York hardcore. Them and This is Hell rock their fucking asses off [Both bands were openers for the tour. -ed]
Beck and I have said our fans are fucking bonkers. A lot of them are to the point where it seems they dont want to listen to any other band but Glassjaw. If they’re going to a Glassjaw show, they don’t want to see an opening band. C’mon. Some of them don’t want to hear my other band, let alone an opener. [laughs]
AP: That’s was my next question. Did you get any Head A-sucks backlash from anyone?
Daryl Palumbo: No. [laughs.] There were some kids who were like [immates scowling tough guy] “Yeah, Head Automatica. Cool. But what the fuck took so long?” [Laughs] Nobody had the balls to call me “pussy” for Head Automatica. I never forget a face, and I saw a lot of familiar faces of kids I know who were too young to see Glassjaw at the time. I was very happy.
AP: Sum up the tour. What were the highlights for you?
Daryl Palumbo: The best thing about the tour was just having it happen. The next best thing was the crowds were fucking beserk. I’m a hardcore kid at heart, and this was full-contact art. [Laughs]. Oh, and I was able to see every episode of LOST while on tour.

blah….blah ….blah…sorry but this is just not glassjaw to me….
February 22nd, 2007 at 8:01 pm
okay, so glassjaw doesn’t have a record coming out this year. glassjaw wants to also do it solo, outside of warner brothers records, outside of Ross Robinson too! what gives?? this is bullshit.
February 22nd, 2007 at 9:57 pm
how could CIS be booed off stage?
thats ridiculous.
February 23rd, 2007 at 6:33 am
ha ha….no you are missing the point here….its not that they want to go solo its that no one wants to produce them…but of course they want everyone to think that they want to go solo….hey trust me im not ragin on them they were once one of my favorite bands along with HA….but to me both bands have not been the real thing to me anymore….they just have lost something….

OMG!!!! I absolutly am in love love love with Glassjaw… their my pride and joy. I don’t know why people are dissin’ them now! Yeah i mean when i got to meet Daryl at a Head Automatica show, he wasn’t to “uppity” about being there which kinda bummed me out because he’s one of my idol’s. I think he’s wicked talented and has an incredible voice, but i would so give him another chance, but i only think that he could go far with Glassjaw!
February 23rd, 2007 at 7:49 am
josho, how do you even know that no one wants to produce them. Now youre just making stuff up.
February 23rd, 2007 at 8:01 am
@josho you are fucking retarded. the band wants to do this solo. beck even built his own personal studio for the new glassjaw. douche.
February 23rd, 2007 at 10:08 am
What? We did not boo them off stage! If anything the crowd was nonchalant about Crime In Stereo. And like Daryl said, most just wanted to see only Glassjaw.
February 23rd, 2007 at 11:47 am
oh and you retards do know?….you shits know nothing….
February 23rd, 2007 at 11:59 am
honestly i could care less about the motivations for everything. their album will speak for itself. you guys can sit here and argue but it really doesn’t matter. those who like the album will buy, those who don’t won’t. insteads of sitting around arguing about this, just wait… see what happens.

if people want to produce nickelback, there are people who want to produce glassjaw.
they’re just wearing their diy ethic on their sleeves this time around.
also, every member of the band has been in glassjaw before, so of course it’s glassjaw.
February 26th, 2007 at 5:14 am
sorry but to me its not the real glassjaw….its not the one that made it happen….think whatever you want about producing….i still think that no one wants too…
February 26th, 2007 at 11:48 am
GJ don’t need warner or ross robinson. obviously his production speaks for itself on both previous albums but the music stands up regardless of production values. i always thought that the DIY hardcore background gj come from was at odds with what warner stands for anyway.
just be grateful we’re getting a new album. who really gives a fuck who produces it or puts it out?
February 26th, 2007 at 6:20 pm
the one that made what happen? they had only three of the same members between eyewtkas and w&t, and although they lost todd, manny’s back on board.
also, why wouldn’t anyone want to produce a band that sells out shows without having released a record in years?
February 26th, 2007 at 8:08 pm
yes thats right the one that made it happen….the glassjaw of 2000-2003….daryl, beck, todd, larry and manny(who was only really in the band for a short time and then quit) who was then replaced by dave…..that was glassjaw…..selling out shows??….
February 27th, 2007 at 8:56 am
the heart of gj is and always will be daryl and beck. maybe a bit of todd in there for good measure but essentially those two are the ones that ‘make it happen’ as you put it. just look at the reaction to the last tour……….it was huge, in my opinion this next album will be the definitive gj release, just listen to what we’ve heard so far; it’s off the hook. oh and manny is a waaaaaaaay better bassist than dave. mans got mad style.

blah blah blah suck a fart out my ass josho. dude even glassjaw never came out with a new cd, what they have laid down so far is some the best music ever maid. if do not not like glassjaw from when they first started, your probably are not a true fan to begin with. do not diss what you can not understand. anything glassjaw does is poetry and pure emotion.
