After a few frustrating years of cancelled gigs and jinxed UK dates, Head Automatica are finally making it over to bring their good time disco rock to British audiences. Frontman Daryl Palumbo can’t wait to show us what they’ve got.
Kerrang: How are you feeling about coming back over?
Daryl Palumbo: “Terribly excited. I can’t wait to get over there and finally play some shows. I love it there, I love being there.”
K: How important is it for you to reintroduce yourself to British audiences?
D: “It’s incredibly important. Of course it’s important. I love the British audience. Sine Glassjaw started I always felt like we made a real solid connection with British Audiences. With Head Automatica and Glassjaw we were widely received by you guys, and I think it’s a shame that we didn’t get to spend more time with you guys over there. I think it’s really important to re-establish that connection with the kids over there.”
K:What can we expect from the shows?
D:“You can expect a party, because that’s what we bring! You can expect the highest energy rock n’ roll band and some new material, which is darker. It’ll be a rager and we’re all excited to play there! It’s going to be madness.”
K: How different is playing with Head Automatica to Glassjaw?
D: “Completely different. It’s like asking what’s the difference between fucking this dude you met last night to fucking your boyfriend; they’re completely different from each other. It’s like the difference between an apple and an orange, they’re very different. One is predominately angry and not really based on getting the crowd feeling good and dancing and drinking and partying. Glassjaw is angry and heavy. Glassjaw’s trying to get across intricacies and being tight and being heavy as possible. It’s very dark. But Head Automatica is a different vibe, we’re trying to get across a lot of energy and true to form rock ‘n’ roll. Be joyous with us and dance and move and party!”
K: Did you ever realize what a rock club classic “Beating Heart Baby” would become?
J: “No Craig [Bonich, guitar] and I wrote that song in about 20 minutes driving across country one day. I just knew it was a good pop song. We just wanted a high energy, body rocking club jam, and it kind of worked.”
