“To a lot of people, ‘house’ is the dirtiest word,’ begins Daryl Palumbo about the musical culture surrounding his latest band (and forth those counting at home). “When People hear that word they think A Night At The Roxbury-or Justice. House music was doing just fine before Justice existed, and I’m sure when they’re gone, it will be fine just as well.”

Palumbo might hold contempt for movies based on SNL routines, but his love for house music has manifested itself with SPORTS, an alliance with house DJ Glue and electro enthusiast Nick Hook (aka Conceller from Men, Women and Children). The trio’s extended mix disc, I’m Hungry (parts of which may be heard at myspace.com/sportscc) finds the unit creating world-class grooves destined to inspire many a booty-moving adventure on the dancefloor. The Sports team deliver everything from the cut-n-patse action of ’90s freestyle (Glue) to gritty electro tracks (Hook) to throbbing ghetto-tech (Palumbo) in a effort to keep a two-hour party percolating around 120 to 135 bmp. But the trio aren’t merely driving from club to club with tons of CDs and vinyl in tow. Sports have been sought after for remixes (check out their recent overhaul of the Fashion’s SoloImpala“) and are working on their own jams when their schedules permit (Glue is an in-demand DJ, Hook is working with MW&C’s Todd Weinstock on a new trio side project, and let’s not get started on Palumbo’s day planner).

Of course, the thought of Palumbo delving into the world of electro-beats will furter infuriate longtime fans clamoring for new tunes from the decidedly non-electro Glassjaw or the blinding grind of United Nations, his vehicle with Thursday’s Geoff Rickley and Converge’s Ben Koller (whose debut is stated for later this year, with a Glassjaw EP to follow). Palumbo wears his love of music publicly, and he’s got no time for people who are only into one thing.

“A lot of people can’t do that because of where their priorities are,” he summarizes. “If your priority is to succeed in the pop-punk world, that’s the only thing you eat, breathe, sleep and shit. Personally my priorities are collecting records, and I think it shows what I do. I can listen to an Orchid record all day, meet up with Geoff and Ben and do United Nations because I’m driven by the sound. Later that night, we’ll get drunk and end up at some bar where the DJ is playing a house track I jock hard.”

“I just get moved by music,” he resigns. “I need to do all these things so I can wake up happy.”
-James Pettigrew

In a Buzznet exclusive interview, Geoff Rickly (of Thursday) talked about the status of the band United Nations (a long awaited side project band featuring your beloved Daryl Palumbo) here. Here are the key parts in the interview.

Rickly: United Nations has 10 songs recorded. Three of them are still missing bass tracks, and one of the members who has a billion other bands has recorded about half the stuff. So we’re pretty close. I think that band will release the record this summer. I hope, at least. It’s going really well. We’re already … the first record I going to be a full-length on Eyeball [which released Thursday’s 1999 debut, Waiting], and then we’re already doing a 7-inch on Deathwish.

Buzznet: Are you going to try to tour behind it?

Rickly: I don’t think that band will ever tour, just because all the bandmembers have so much going on.

Buzznet: Any one-offs, possibly?

Rickly: I’m hoping there’s a show. That’d be super-fun. We’re trying to figure it out. We actually have some weird stuff in the works. I was actually thinking too, like, that there’s … there’s all these weird themes on the first record, and I was thinking [about making] a United Nations record called United Nations Plays Pretty for a Bunch of F—ing Babies, and do all-children’s versions of the songs, like lullabies, like sing-alongs, like the Kidz Bop version. And this is the thing – everybody keeps saying [United Nations are] grind. It’s not really grind, it’s power-violence. But I think a kids’ power-violence record would be so rad.”

Sounds good!

Tuned: Tell us about your year…
Daryl Palumbo: It was a busy ass year. I toured the whole year on the Head Automatica record and did a bunch of Glassjaw tours as well. Plus, I DJ’d a bunch of parties all across the fuckin world, so I was pretty happy. It was the busiest year of my life probably.

Tuned: Were you glad to come back to the UK this year?
Daryl Palumbo: Oh yeah of course man. I’ve been waiting to come back to the UK for like 5 or 6 years. It was like a dream come true; it was the most eventful piece of my year and the happiest period.

Tuned: Europe was the highlight of ’07 then?
Daryl Palumbo: In a way, yeah. Doing the whole Head Automatica tour across Europe was so amazing, as were the shows in the UK. And then to finish off with two Glassjaw shows – the first UK Glassjaw shows since 2003 and one of them at Brixton… Amazing! Getting Cardboard City off the ground was a highlight too; 2007 was the year that it all stepped up a gear. We’ve started doing a lot of Cardboard City parties everywhere; Nick, Glue and I have been doing a lot of DJ sets and Glue and I got to spin a lot across Europe. There’s just been so much shit this year you know!

Tuned: What’s been soundtracking your year?
Daryl Palumbo: A lot of bumpin’ house music, a lot of old pop music, a lot of random German rock bands from the 60’s and 70’s…I’ve dedicated a lot of my year to Frank Zappa of course, as I have the past 20 years of my life.

Tuned: 2007 was quite an eclectic year for you musically; what lies ahead in 2008?
Daryl Palumbo: Yes it has been, and I think 2008 is going to be even more so. The more eclectic the better really - it makes every project better I think. In ‘08 I’m gonna do a new Head Automatica record, new Glassjaw album, second Sports record, the House Of Blow album…a lot of shit! And this year I’ll hopefully get the United Nations record together too, which is me and Geoff from Thursday.

And there is also a short tidbit about the upcoming House of Blow album/EP…

This year, Daryl Palumbo finally made a welcome return to British shores with Head Automatica and Glassjaw, and 2008 promises highly anticipated new full lengths from both bands. However, the prolific musical entrepreneur and busy-diary-addict is also set upon introducing the world to two more of his many projects; United Nations (featuring Geoff from Thursday and Ben Koller of Converge) and House Of Blow, Palumbo’s collaboration with Hatebreed guitarist Sean Martin. Though music for United Nations has yet to emerge (insiders tell us to expect furious, stripped down hardcore), House Of Blow have posted two demo tracks - ‘Banger’ and ‘Afghani Black’ - on their MySpace page to whet our collective whistles. If these tunes are anything to go by, the band’s upcoming E.P and album will carve a middle ground somewhere between the dirty, electronic grooves of early Head Automatica and the darker, ominous vibes of Glassjaw; a most inviting, ice cool musical equation. This House is one you’ll definitely want a key to.

Daryl Palumbo has been interviewed by “The Daily Orange“, the independent student newspaper of Syracuse, New York (they are playing there tonight). Daryl gives more vague information on his upcoming releases from Glassjaw, Head Automatica, and House of Blow. He also offers his insight on illegal downloading.

Indie dance-rock band Head Automatica will play Schine Underground tonight, bringing to a close University Union’s Bandersnatch Concert series. The show begins at 8 p.m., with local electric-pop group Fat Camp opening. The Daily Orange had a chance to chat with Head Automatica’s lead singer Daryl Palumbo. What appeals to you most about playing college shows?
It’s cool to play to a smaller audience in an intimate setting, and it’s definitely cool to play to a crowd of people with a common thing, like all going to school together. I can talk to everybody about that common bond, and it feels like we’re hanging out more than other kinds of shows.

A lot of people feel that the songs on your latest album, “Popaganda,” aren’t as dancy as your first record “Decadence.” Was this a conscious decision?
I was just kind of writing a particular style of music, and I just wanted to get it out there for everybody. I was trying to write, you know, pop, and it definitely is a little different than “Decadence.” But I wasn’t trying to make it more or less dancy. It’s definitely a dancy record, but in a different respect than the previous material.

So do you want to see everybody dancing tomorrow night?
Oh hell yeah, man. That’s what it’s all about, everybody having a good time at the show.

There are rumors floating around about a new Head Automatica EP coming out before your other band Glassjaw gets back together. Any details?
They both may be happening at the same time, and it’s not an EP anymore; it’s a full album, and it’ll be released around the same time as the new Glassjaw album, sometime pretty soon. There’s also going to be something out by House of Blow (Daryl’s hip-hop/electronic project with Hatebreed guitarist Sean Martin).

What made you decide to bring Glassjaw back from hiatus?
Glassjaw never really went on hiatus, I just wasn’t doing that band as much. We played shows and wrote material, but it just happened that I was doing Head Automatica a lot. I’m just doing more with Glassjaw than I have for a while. It’s not a conscious decision for me to do one band at a time, it just kind of happens, you know?

You’ve worked with a laundry list of bands and artists, is there anybody else in particular you’d like to work with?
Yeah, I dunno, plenty of people, but Men Women & Children, Mastercraft and We Are the Fury, mainly.

A few dozen Syracuse students were sued by the RIAA recently. As an artist, how do you feel about illegal downloading?
I mean, it’s stealing, but everybody seems to do it. It seems to be impossible to do anything about it. I don’t know if it really can be stopped. It can definitely help smaller bands, just to get their names out, but it might hurt larger bands. Like, a small band doesn’t sell that many records, anyway, so it won’t hurt them as much if people download it instead, but a bigger band loses a lot of record sales. I mean, I’ve downloaded illegally before. A lot of people I know have, too, even though they speak out against it.

Daryl Palumbo will provide vocals on the Rondo Brothers sophomore album “Seven Minutes to Midnight” on the track “Only The Noble“; which was previously released as a side project Debracadabra. Click here for more information on Debracadabra.

Daryl confirmed having a song from Debracadabra on the next Rondo album in the last interview I had with him. Here’s the extracted section:

James: So no work with the Rondo Brothers lately?
Daryl: I haven’t worked with them in a while. I am in constant touch with Jim and Brandon and I think they’re putting out a new record. I co-wrote and sang on one of the songs that we did as a side project 2 years ago.

James: You mean Debracadabra?
Daryl: Yeah that originally was a Debracadabra song. Debracadabra was… uh, about 2 years ago Head Automatica were recording a bunch of songs where I don’t write music. I just wrapped my vocals around it and they would piece it together. I would go in blindly and throw in vocals. It was a fun experience and I wish we would’ve recorded more. Luckily I think some of the songs will come out on the Rondo Brothers record.

If you would like to hear some previews of the tracks, please visit this eMusic page.

Note: “Only the Noble” will only appear on the Japan version of “Seven Minutes to Midnight“.

Also, “Only The Noble” appears to be the same version that’s on the Debracadabra CD that was uploaded.

REVIEWS:

By Niccolai

I took a zillion pictures and had the same problem with the fog. I’ll post them tomorrow since I just had to drive 3 hours home from the show and I’m tired.

I also recorded their entire set, but I used my cellphone and I don’t have a USB to connect my phone to my computer, so I would haveto email it tomyself in 1 minute clips.. and yea I’m definately not doing that.

Anywho, their set was awsome, but due to daryl not being able to hear everything, there was some off timing and fumbling over words. I also think he must have put a few drinks down because he forgot the words to the last verse of afgani black.

It was still awsome though.

Alot of people were turned off from the song Banger that they recently put on myspace, but their other songs don’t sound like that, a few of them had an almost glassjaw sound.

I also got what appears to be their set list

I’ll add my pictures tomorrow, and if anyone is ever thinking about driving from eastern new hampshire to central CT for one band’s set, it’s WAY worth it.

Oh, and also there were exotic dancers…. or “Naked white girls” as Daryl called them.

By Wexes is With Hexes

i got onstage during XO’s line-up because all of you are insane and climb each other and then XO would like tackle each other and the ladies into the crowd then friggin one of them grabbed the microphone stand i was behind and he sung it around his head before he trashed it and fell upon it. I was in the far right corner of the stage the whole time.

XO was the most ridiculous band i have ever seen.

and HOB played like 5 songs and an intro:
1. Intro (theyre all still pigs)
2. Banger
3. Tell it to the Pope
4. You’re One of the Ones I Won’t Remember (probably not the title)
5. The Grapevine
6. Afghani Black

i’m nearly positive thats right but i’m a little hazy, and the third one could have been later in the show cause i seem to remember them playing another song that was biblical-ish inbetween Grapevine and Afghani, and i know he followed Banger with a very soft song (Banger was much much much better live, sorry tool, i think you’re wrong on this one because he added so much more life than whats in the mp3). I wanted the set list but it was two pieces of paper that daryl brought with him and made sure to leave with and there was a ton of writing on both sheets so what i kind of figured was maybe they were lyric-starters or something of that nature cause everyone was so friggin high i’m surprised they did the show.

f. sean was the man and i found this randow white towel when thew doors first opened and i hung out in the parking lot, where i saw him, daryl and i think Krazyglue pile into F. Sean’s xterra to probably blaze around 7ish, and after the show i had him signed it and i waited for daryl but he is wiley cause this is twice he’s eluded me because i hung around until 2:30am this morning and no dice. I might post a picture of it, he signed it:
XO SK
F. SEAN
HOB

I got Slow Suicide Stimulus and Yakballz setlists and i could probably post those too. At the merch table they had this wacky demo tape or something by XO and it was limited to 40 so i bought one for $2 but i’m not gonna open it for the sake of collecting and also my lack of a cassette tapedeck. It’s got a green piece of paper on it and it’s wrapped in tinfoil i’m pretty sure, so i have no idea what’s on it or what it looks like and I only remember the words “Maids” in the title.

Out of the rap groups, I thought Yakballz was the best and Benn Grimm was the worst. Grimm is the fattest d00d — beside the round bro that played keyboards during HOB (i think he’s a member of XO but he’s not on the cassette) — and he had they honeys on stage with him who were garbed in lingerie, fishnets and knee high boots (and plenty of body art) who made him a favorite, and i mean i enjoyed the ladies but friggin when he said “I’mo take my teeth out for this” and then he did… made me so sick.

But yeah, incredible show, well worth 10 bucks to be part of HOBistory and IO guess the only complaint would be when Daryl messed a couplet of lyrics in Afghani, the “I mistook you for kin” part he said “it’s the children on fire that sells” again.

I will never go back to New London, CT. Worst town I’ve ever been to.
